Which Option is Better? In Person or Virtual Therapy for Anxiety?

As an Anxiety Counselor in Richmond, Virginia I love in person Anxiety Counseling so much more. This is purely a personal preference though and not necessarily based on any kind of specific research. I just enjoy being able to physically sit just a few feet away from someone in the same room as you can really feel the emotions much more strongly.
I would also say in person helps me see body language much better in a way that I can respond more easily to it. For example is a client starts quickly tapping their feet, I can point it out and ask them to help me understand why they might be doing that. If they said something like “it makes me really nervous to talk about this subject,” then I can respond by saying “i really appreciate your courage” by talking about this. If we were meeting virtually then of course that whole interaction would not have taken place.
Now regarding virtual therapy, I certainly don’t have a problem with it. In fact I do see a percentage of my clients virtually. I have noticed especially with Social Anxiety Counseling or even counseling phobias, that virtual often will help a client be able to open up more since they feel a bit more protected so to speak in their own home.
So certainly virtual therapy has it’s place and especially became more acceptable during the previous pandemic. And so that is another reason it can helpful. If my client has the flu but they feel well enough to talk through a session online, then they can get help that would otherwise have not.
So to wrap up, my subjective preference in meeting in person but again each one has it’s benefits. I really enjoy meeting with my clients either way they would like to meet.
